Why we give hurricanes a name is simple to understand. It helps us stay safe and it prevents confusion. Instead of using longitude and latitude for identification, we use easy to say names so there's less chance of an error when reporting on them. Sometimes hurricanes happen real close together and it can be confusing if we don't identify them correctly. It also makes it easy for traffic controllers, meteorologist, emergency response teams, and everyday citizens to communicate during a storm.
Here's a fun tip :
If winds are sustained to a speed of 39 miles per hour, they are given a name and categorized as a tropical storm.
If winds are sustained to a speed of 74 miles per hour, they are categorized as a hurricane.
